We are looking for unique individuals who would love to become a Dementia Friends & Care Companions to someone like Eileen. Are you a car driver, live in the Royston Area of North Hertfordshire and looking for a rewarding part-time job to be proud of?

Mary is one of our Dementia Friends & Care Companions – Working in care is not what you might think: -

Mary had always been a very caring person, but admits she had the wrong idea of what being a Care Companion would involve and put off doing it for so many years!  She now can’t imagine doing anything else.

I came across this role when my children had grown up and left the nest and didn’t need me as much. I wanted something that was rewarding but that I could also split between spending time with my Grandchildren. I looked after my terminally ill mum and I wanted to do something where I could provide comfort to other families and give them assurance that there’s always a helping hand there for their mum or dad. This Dementia Friends & Care Companions job was just what I was looking for.

Mary says, “I get very annoyed now when people say, “well isn’t it just wiping bottoms!” I can tell them it certainly isn’t, and the reward I get is unreal! “

“I support a few older adults in the area and each day is different. One of my clients Eileen says she can’t wait for my visits and greets me with a hug every day, and that makes my day. Some mornings I will help her get out of bed, get washed and help make her breakfast. I thought I would struggle with the personal care part of the role, but I don’t. I realise it is no different to what I would do for a friend or relative and can be as simple as brushing her hair or help her finish getting dressed. Eileen is living with early onset Dementia and would always sing just a few lines from her favourite song, but she can’t remember the name. I found out what it was called and now we play it on my visits, it’s now also become my favourite. This isn’t a job, it’s a privilege and I’m proud to do this and work for a marvellous company.”

Be part of something special

The company I work for have won several awards and was set up by our owner who aims to deliver the very best standards of care to enable their clients to take control of their lives and they fully respects their unique preferences  Nothing we do is ever rushed and we never spend less and an hour with one of our customers, the whole focus is centred around companionship. I feel part of something very special in my local community and I work with some fantastic people!

If you can relate to Mary’s story in anyway and you would love to find out more.  Do what I she did and click apply, she got the chance to ask lots of questions and the job was explained to her so well, and the training is fantastic!! Don’t worry if you don’t have a CV – simply email Health & Social Care Jobs with your full name, address, postcode, if you are a car driver and tell us about yourself!  We can’t wait to hear from you!

We need people with compassion, empathy and big hearts
