We are looking for people who are looking for Volunteer jobs to become a Befriender's & Companion in the Addlestone area of Surrey. No experience is necessary as excellent training is provided, being a car driver is essential.
Could I be a Befriender & Companion
People that join us tend to be looking for a part-time job that offers them reward, they also tend to be very caring, passionate individuals who want to make a difference to older people living in their local community, they have often looked after a relative themselves and realised just how rewarding it can be. We have people working for us from all walks of life and all ages, in fact there is no upper age limit!
You do need to be available some early mornings, lunchtimes, evening and a few hours on a weekend too. I wouldn’t describe this as a job, I would describe it as a vocation.
What would I be doing?
May is a 96-year-old lady who has lived in her own home since her children were young, she lost her husband 30 years ago but has always stayed independent and outgoing mainly due to her large family, including 13 Grandchildren, and 14 Great Grandchildren. May’s family started noticing changes in her behaviour, she was still very much active, but she wasn’t going upstairs she was sleeping on the sofa and you could tell the shower had not been used. She has a set routine, shopping on a Friday, she goes to the hairdressers every Thursday and most days walks into town. If you didn’t know May you would think she was fine, but she is in the early stages of Dementia.
May now has a Befriender & Companion, they get her up on a morning as she is terrified of the stairs, they also prompt her to wash (if they didn’t, she wouldn’t do it) and prepare her some porridge. They may also collect some shopping for her or even pick up her prescription for her.
Her Companion says, “May is lovely, with a cheeky sense of humour, I love spending time with her, she always has funny tales to tell me and she always says to me “you treat me as a person” which I take as a compliment”.
