We are looking for people who are looking for Volunteer jobs to become a Paid Volunteer, Befriender & Companion in the Poole/Dorset. No experience is necessary as excellent training is provided, being a car driver is essential.

Could I be a Paid Volunteer?

People that join us tend to be looking for a part-time job that offers them reward, they also tend to be very caring, passionate individuals who want to make a difference to older people living in their local community, they have often looked after a relative themselves and realised just how rewarding it can be. We have people working for us from all walks of life and all ages, in fact there is no upper age limit!

You do need to be available some early mornings, lunchtimes, evening and ideally a few hours on alternate weekends too. I wouldn’t describe this as a job, I would describe it as a vocation.

Who would I be a Paid Volunteer & Befriender to?

Martha is a 96-year-old lady who has lived in her own home since her children were young, she lost her George husband 30 years ago but has always stayed independent and outgoing mainly due to her large family, including 13 Grandchildren, and 14 Great Grandchildren. Martha’s family started noticing changes in her behaviour, she was still very much active, but she wasn’t going upstairs she was sleeping on the sofa and you could tell the shower had not been used. She has a set routine, shopping on a Friday, she goes to the hairdressers every Saturday morning and most days walks into town. If you didn’t know Martha you would think she was fine, but she is in the early stages of Dementia.

Martha now has a Befrienders & Companions, who gets her up on a morning as she is terrified of the stairs, they also prompt her to wash (if they didn’t, she wouldn’t do it) and prepare her some porridge. They then take her out into town for a few hours some days to do her shopping at Waitrose and she loves her breakfast at the Bay Leaf Café (because one of the waiters gives her free tea top-ups).

Her Companion says, “Martha is lovely, with a cheeky sense of humour, she will tell you she doesn’t eat much then demolish a full English breakfast, I love spending time with her, she always has funny tales to tell me and she always says to me “you treat me as a person” which I take as a compliment”.

(Martha is just an example of someone you may support)
