Service Manager

We are looking for a passionate, creative, innovative, adaptable, motivated and committed Service Manager to lead our exciting, brand-new Support After Suicide service that operates within 5 London Boroughs in North Central London. Your role will be a permanent position, working full time, 35 hours per week. 
What the new service will provide:
Our Support After Suicide Service aims to support those bereaved by suicide to face the immediate, acute, disorientating and painful experience of the first weeks and months after a suicide.  The service aims to support those immediately affected by suicide e.g. families and friends, as well as those who have been exposed to suicide e.g. neighbours, schools, colleges, social groups and healthcare professionals.
We provide support to people bereaved by suicide who live, work or study in the London Boroughs of Camden, Barnet, Haringey, Islington and Enfield. However, we also provide support to people who live outside of the Boroughs but are affected by a suicide that occurred within the Boroughs. The service will co-locate with our Camden Advocacy Service based in Camden, with Suicide Bereavement Workers being a mobile workforce based at home and delivering support in the community. The service operates on weekdays, delivering flexibly up to 8pm to meet the needs of those in work/education.
The service provides the following types of support:

  •  121 psycho-social support provided through face-to-face, telephone, email or text support
  •  Practical support, including support to deal with the police, funeral arrangements or visiting the place of death, as well as accessing legal advice or financial support, advocacy and liaison support, such as offering to accompany clients at inquests, dealing with the media, or advocating for clients by speaking to professionals or statutory agencies on their behalf
  •  Provide verbal and written information
  •  Proactive signposting and onwards referral
  •  Follow ups at anniversary dates
  •  Bereavement peer support groups
  •  Remembrance and memorial events
  •  Awareness raising and presentation sessions around the impact of suicide, support after a suicide and suicide prevention
  •  Providing group support sessions after a suicide e.g. to school-based staff

What we are looking for in a Service Manager?
Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience of managing a service which has delivered support to at least one of the following groups – support for those affected by suicide, support for carers or support for people affected by bereavement and loss
  • Experience of managing a service in a health or social care setting, including managing and supporting a staff team and volunteers
  • Demonstrating leadership skills, embedding a culture in services that reflects Rethink Mental Illness’ values of Understanding, Expertise, Commitment, Hope, Passion and Openness
  • The ability to work proactively and collaboratively with others and bring a positive enthusiasm to work
  • Experience of dealing with and reporting incidents/accidents/near misses and safeguarding reporting
  • The ability to assess, plan and monitor support to achieve and evidence recovery and service outcomes
  • Experience of leading and managing a dispersed team across multiple sites, including recruiting and managing performance
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to plan and prioritise a complex workload
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of the needs of people with mental illness and be familiar with best practice developments
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate confidently with colleagues of all levels
  • The ability to effectively managing budgets
  • The ability to engage with, and place people using our services, at the heart of everything we do
  • Hold an NVQ 3 / QCF Diploma in Health & Social Care related subject
  • Excellent IT skills – proficient in the use of Microsoft Office

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

  • Lived experience of bereavement by suicide
  • Experience of delivering training and awareness raising sessions
  • Experience of working with external academic evaluators to review a service
  • Good knowledge of the NCL boroughs
  • Direct experience or a qualification in mental health, social work, advocacy, occupational therapy, psychotherapy or counselling
  • Completed suicide prevention/bereavement training e.g. ASIST, SafeTalk, PABBS etc.
  • Knowledge of the theories of grief and experience of supporting people with loss
